Scott

Aubin

Author of Knot Today and recipient of service dog Dash.

As a veteran, Scott Aubin experienced many challenges throughout this life due struggling with PTSD after his time in the military. In this extended interview, he explained how being in combat, being a victim of assault as a child, and losing his father were all the major causes of his trauma. In 2017, Aubin was able to find hope by joining The Service Dog Project, "They saved my life, they were an instrumental part of me getting my life back together." He also describes his special process of getting paired with his service dog named Dash and how his journey of recovering changed the moment they met. His time with the SDP inspired him to publish his book Knot Today, where he goes in further detail about how he was able to overcome his PTSD with the help of his best friend Dash.

How did The Service Dog Project help Scott Aubin?

Meet Dona, a recipient and frequent volunteer at SDP to better understand the impact this                                                                       program can make on people's lives.

After the devastating loss of her Labrador, Donna knew she had to continue on her journey. With a progressive condition that affects her mobility, she knew this loss would not mean the end. Being only 5’2” she was a little weary of transitioning from a Labrador, to a pup as large as a Great Dane. Most Great Danes being over half her size! But six years after owning not one Dane, but two, Donna feels confident enough to say that she "came here and found love."

The experience so far? "Unbelievable." Having Wicked as her mobility service dog allows her to break boundaries she wouldn’t be able to otherwise. With a senior track runner in college, Donna no longer has to sit meets out. With Wicked by her side, she no longer has to rely on a cane to walk. She can communicate with others confidently with her companion by her side.

Now she returns to the farm to give back. Since the service dogs are donated, Donna comes back to the farm to do laundry and help out. It gives her dog Wicked a chance to play with other pups off-duty, and it gives her a way to say thank you.
